Sunflower Oil (Helianthus annuus) is obtained by being compressed from the seeds of the Sunflower plant. It has long been labeled as an oil that is used in cooking/frying foods. While this is true and it is a very healthy oil to consume, this oils beneficial properties on ones skin and hair unfortunately have been overlooked until fairly recently.
Sunflower oil is a very light gentle oil that absorbs easily and is so mild it is often found in formulas for infants. Comprised mainly of Linoleic acid it also contains large amounts of Oleic and Palmitic acid. Add in lecithin, carotenoids and vitamins A,C,D and E and you have a very effective oil for health and beauty products.

Benefits on Skin

1. It's an Emollient

Due to its composition Sunflower Oil helps skin to keep its moisture. When this happens smooth, soft, healthy skin is the end result.

2. Protective Barrier

Even thought this oil is light, non-greasy, and easily absorbed it does leave an excellent protective barrier on the skin. Along with the large amounts of Beta-Carotene that reduces sensitivity to the sun, Sunflower Oil can be effective in preventing sun damage.

3. Prevent Premature Aging

The high concentration of Vitamins found in Sunflower Oil help prevent damage, wrinkles and fine lines caused by free radicals. In addition it will ensure your skins elasticity and collagen remains optimal so you can show off that younger looking skin for longer.

4. It's an Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory

Because it contains some essential fatty acids including omega-6's, Sunflower Oil is great for treating a wide variety of injuries and issues including sunburns. In short it will create a protective barrier, eliminate bacteria, and aid in new cell growth.

5. Stop Acne

Excess sebum, as well as dirt and bacteria can be a major factor in causing acne outbreaks. What Sunflower Oil does is create a protective layer that stops dirt and external bacteria from making contact with the skin. It also helps reduce excess sebum creation which is another win for combating acne.

6. Healthy Balanced skin

This oil is rich in Beta-Carotene which the body converts to Vitamin A. The reason this is a big deal is because Vitamin A:

-Exfoliates, thus producing even, smooth skin
-Reduces brown spots and pigmentation
-Improves skin hydration
-Decreases sebum production when needed
-Repairs the cell structure of the epidermis which helps with UV protection
-Helps with wound healing
-Balances blood flow which aids in a natural, healthy skin appearance

Benefits On Hair

7. Prevents Thinning Hair

Sunflower Oil contains gamma alpha linolenic acid (GLA) which has been proven to aid with hair loss and baldness. Add in the fact that it has some Vitamin E which is essential for hair growth and you have an ingredient that tackles all areas of hair health.

8. Gives a great appearance

Since Sunflower Oil is so light, it is perfect for adding a beautiful sheen without being greasy.

9. Control the Frizz

Frizz is usually from dry, damaged hair and Helianthus Annuus Oil is an excellent conditioning agent. Just a little is enough to contain any frizzies and make your hair more manageable.

Like so many other oils, Sunflower is an excellent tool that can be used by itself or mixed with additional oils to help keep you looking your best.
