Beard Balms

Your beard is a huge part of who you are and a well groomed beard speaks to that. You don't want just any beard balm you want the best beard balm. Primitive Outpost balms are for those that enjoy the benefits of a quality beard oil but prefer a product with better ability to tame their beard. These use the same natural oils as our beard oils, but we have also added beeswax, Babassu Oil, Shea Butter, and Cocoa Butter, as well as Rhassoul Clay to offer hold and extra conditioning.

Looking good is the name of the game

Having a well shaped beard looks awesome (unless your are going for the caveman look). A nicely groomed beard will turn heads and a big part of that is using a beard balm due to the fact that it will moisturize and offer hold at the same time.
If your facial hair is a little out of sorts or dry then our extra conditioning balm might be your balm of choice. But if your beard is just straight up out of control then our extra hold beard balm is the better offering. The increased wax helps to keep things in check and looking their best.
We get that not all beards are the same. Different hair types, different lengths, different styling objectives, and the list goes on. For this reason we decided to make one for extra conditioning and one for extra hold. Genius right?! Both options are non-greasy and meticulously formulated for best results.
Our compact, durable, and recyclable tins are the perfect vessel for these allowing them to go where you do.
A lot of beard balm products use synthetic fragrances but we decided to go the route of essential oils. These essential oils don't have the same synthetic composition as fragrances so you eliminate any harmful ingredients and potential scent sensitivities.

What is Beard Balm

Beard Balm is sometimes also called beard pomade, beard cream, beard lotion, or beard wax and is a leave in conditioner. It also works well as a styling product helping to shape beards as well as keep stray sections or hairs in check.

2 versions of balm so you get what you need

Sure, we could have said our balm is an all in one product but we know that doesn't suit everyones needs.

Extra Conditioning Balm

Just like it sounds it offers an immense amount of conditioning due to increased amounts of butters and oils while still offering light to moderate hold.

Extra Hold Balm

Just flip what we said above. This version has more wax to deal with wild facial hair outbreaks but still gets the job done in regards to moisturizing.

Natural Beard Balm vs a synthetic Beard Balm?

The vast majority of beard balms on the market using natural oils, butters and waxes but there still are some that have some petroleum jelly, synthetics and fragrance mixed in. Oils and butters absorb into the hair and skin and get you great healthy conditioning. Petroleum will coat, seal and smother the hair and not offer any absorbed moisturizing. Always remember a healthy beard is a happy beard and will prove that to you in its appearance and growth.

Beard Balm vs Oil

BEARD BALM VS OIL: WHICH IS BEST?

So you've done your research and you know you should be using some sort of product on your beard. The question is Beard Balm or Oil: Which is best? If you find yourself trying to figure out which one is better for you then you aren't alone. It's a very common question, and one we will answer here.

BEARD OILS

This is a simple to use beard moisturizer and conditioner that helps nourish and soften your facial hair while also taking care of the oh so important skin underneath. Oil is hands down the more well known and popular of the two choices, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best choice for your beard.

WHAT'S IN BEARD OIL?

Beard Oil generally comes in a bottle with either a dropper, reducer of spray pump. We recommend the dropper as is gives you excellent control over how much you are using and keeps things neat and tidy. The oil is a blend of carrier oils and if you want it scented its going to have either fragrance or essential oils in the mix. Fragrances are synthetic and can be created with ingredients that aren't so great for your beard or even your health. We'd suggest sticking with those made with essential oil as they are natural and can also offer some therapeutic benefits.
Now the important part, there are many types of carrier oils and they all have certain properties and benefits but the trick is to get the right ones in the right quantities. If the oils are too light they absorb quickly but not be around to help out for the long haul. If they are too thick and heavy they'll stick around but give you too greasy of a beard. What you want is somewhere in the middle.

BEARD OIL BENEFITS

Primitive Outpost Beard Oil can be used on beards of all types and length with excellent results but works especially well on newer beards. New growth up to around several months can really benefit from it since it:

-reduces beard itch
-reduces beard dandruff
-moisturizes your beard as well as your face underneath
-adds a healthy shine
-softens your beard
-creates optimal conditions for a healthy beard and therefore better growth

HOW TO APPLY

You want to start out with a clean beard so the ideal time to apply it is after cleaning your beard with a natural beard wash. Towel dry your beard so its just slightly damp and put several drops to a dime sized amount of beard oil in your palm. Massage it into your beard starting at the hair follicles and working to words the ends. After you've evenly distributed it throughout your beard, grab your wooden beard comb and give it a good ol' combing. This will make sure the oil is evenly distributed and also get any snags out. Now you can head out into the world and show off your awesome beard. If your facial hair is dry and brittle you can repeat this several times a day.

BEARD BALM

Beard Balm sometimes called beard pomade or beard wax is a leave in conditioner but also works as a styling agent helping the user to shape their growth and keep any stubborn areas in check.

WHAT'S IN BEARD BALM?

While oil is exactly that and stays fluid, balm is a solid that usually comes in a tin or container. They vary in consistency and in how much sculpting power they have and have similar oils that are found in beard oil products but add in beeswax and butters (commonly Shea Butter) which contribute to its styling abilities. Some products use petroleum jelly as a thickening agent which is synthetic and is not recommended for your beard.

We take a slightly different stance on beard balms as we offer both a lighter hold designed for extra conditioning and an extra hold variety which is more of a wax to handle even the most unruly beards.
We also differ in what we have used as ingredients. In addition to beeswax and shea butter we also use cocoa butter, babassu oil, and Rhassoul clay.

Cocoa butter is a great conditioner that is very firm when it solidifies.
Babassu Oil is like a long lost relative of coconut oil. It is a solid oil that offers incredible conditioning benefits, is an antibacterial, but unlike coconut oil it absorbs quickly and doesn't leave a greasy film. We're a huge fan of babassu oil.
Rhassoul clay draws toxins from skin and hair, moisturizes while doing so, and adds lots of volume which is excellent for a full looking beard.

The same things as with beard oils applies here. Getting the proper mix is vital so you receive all the benefits without a greasy feel.

BEARD BALM BENEFITS

Primitive Outposts Beard balm can be used on all beard types and lengths but works wonders on mid to long length beards. If you have a wild beard that likes to do its own thing then this is should be your go to product as it will help with:

-reducing beard dandruff
-moisturizing your facial hair as well as your face underneath
-giving you a thick, full looking beard
-creating optimal conditions for a healthy beard and therefore better growth
-creating a barrier/ seal that helps to protect and keep your facial hair moisture in
-offering styling capabilities
-Something to keep in mind is that while beard oil gives you a gloss or shine, beard balm offers more of a matte appearance, and to some people that's a huge plus

HOW TO APPLY

You want to start out with a clean beard so the ideal time to apply it is after cleaning your beard with a natural beard wash. Towel dry your beard so its just slightly damp and scoop out a small amount of balm with the back of your thumb. Rub the balm between your hands until it softens and then run your fingers and hands through your beard. Massage it into your beard starting at the hair follicles and working to words the ends. After you've evenly distributed it throughout your beard, grab your wooden beard comb and give it a good ol' combing. This will make sure the balm is evenly distributed and also get any snags out giving your hair a straight look. If you would rather encourage any sort of curl you can scrunch you beard with your hands. Now you can head out into the world and show off your awesome beard. If you feel a need to repeat this during the run of the day, go for it.

BEARD BALM VS OIL: WHICH IS BEST? CONCLUSION

So while balm and oil do offer many of the same benefits they do different things. Beard oil offers the best in moisturizing for the face and hair which results in a soft beard with a shine but offers little in the shaping department. Beard balm while still being a great conditioner offers assistance in shaping and sealing your beard. This will get you a matte look that won't feel quite as soft due to the beeswax and butters in the mix but does help with long term conditioning.

The better product really comes down to what works for you and what style you are looking to have. If you ask us, we'd say both rock and there is absolutely nothing wrong with utilizing both beard growing products. Play around with the application times and see what works best for you. Some people apply the oil followed by the balm. Others apply the balm in the morning and the oil at night. Its your personal style so figure out what works best for you and look awesome.
