Being aware of and controlling what goes into and onto our bodies has become of increasing importance to many people as they move toward a healthier lifestyle. One of the main concerns of late has been with what goes under their arms as many of the ingredients in antiperspirant have come under fire causing many to look for safer alternatives. We offer deodorants made with safe, natural ingredients. Oh yeah, did I mention that they actually work.

Antiperspirant vs Deodorant

Antiperspirants use aluminum to block the pores. This prevents you from sweating. Sounds good right? Well....not so much. First off, your body sweating is its way of cooling the body down and removing toxins. Everybody sweats.

When sweat builds up behind clogged ducts, it stays trapped beneath the skin. This causes a buildup of bacteria, which actually causes bad smells. Not just a natural smell, but that really bad B.O smell. Basically you will need to continually use these antiperspirants or deal with the smell.

Secondly, antiperspirants contain a slew of not so healthy ingredients. Lets take a look at what they are and what they do.

The Culprits

  • Aluminum Compounds (Aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycine). Aluminum found in antiperspirants have been linked with  Alzheimer’s disease, various types of skin irritations, as well as cancer.
  • Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl) These have been associated with endocrine disruption, reproductive disorders, premature aging , and cancer
  • Phthalates – Cancer, birth defects, infertility, allergen
  • Proplyene glycol – Has been shown to be eye, lung, and skin irritant as well as a reproductive and fetal neurotoxin linked to kidney and liver damage
  • Triclosan – Antibacterial agent banned in several countries due contribution to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, endocrine disruption, muscle weakness, skin, eyes, and lung irritation
  • Talc – Non-reproductive organ system toxin, possible carcinogen if contaminated with asbestiform fibers
  • Silica – Possible carcinogen if contaminated with crystalline quartz, skin, eyes and lung irritation
  • Steareths– Endocrine disruption, developmental/reproductive toxicity, skin irritation

Yikes! Not exactly what you want to be dealing with.

 

No More Yellow Stains

If you've used antiperspirant in the past then you likely noticed that the armpit areas of your light coloured shirts get a yellow stain over time. This isn't from your sweat. It's actually  the acidity of the aluminum compounds causing a reaction with fabric. Remove the aluminum, you get rid of the ugly yellow stains.

 

By now you are probably well on your way to wanting to make the switch. So in a effort to make the transition as easy as possible, we've included some tips and tricks to help you out.

 

 

Pits Tips

So you've made or are thinking of making the switch to natural deodorant. First off, "Good for you". That is a massive step to improve your well being as there are numerous benefits. The biggest thing that needs to be said about natural deodorant is......It isn't your typical anti-antiperspirant/deodorant. There are many things that are different and some little tricks that make the switch over easier, so lets talk about them.

1. There are 2 formulas.

With non-aluminum baking soda, and a sensitive skin deodorant without. The reason for this is some people react (get an irritation) to baking soda. This is a small amount of people but if you are one of them you'll know it. So, like any of our products we always recommend testing it on a small area for any reaction before diving in. 

Why do we use baking soda? Because it works very well for eliminating odour, and if you can use it without any issues it is the more effective option (although our baking soda free variety still does work very, very well)

That being said, just be aware of the difference.

2. Less is more

If you are putting the same amount on your pits as what you use to use with your old deodorant/antiperspirant, then you are putting on WAY too much. A few quick swipes is more than enough. Putting too much on is also one of the biggest reasons people get a reaction on their skin and think they can't use baking soda. In reality if they used less, they might not get a reaction at all.

3. Temperature

Because many natural ingredients are sensitive to temperature, you will likely have to consider your climate. If your area is hot all the time, try to keep your deodorant in a cool area. If you live in a cooler climate, you might need to keep the deodorant pressed up against your skin for a short amount of time to let your body temperature soften it slightly.

4. Give it some time

Because some of the ingredients need time to absorb into your skin, we recommend giving the deodorant a few minutes to soak into your pits before putting your top on. Remember, you don't need to slather it on, so it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to sufficiently absorb.

5. Perspiration

If you find you are sweating more than you use to then that is a good thing. Anti-antiperspirant blocks the pores and holds everything in, which is not what you want. Natural deodorant lets your body do what it was designed to do.

If you experience more moisture than normal then give it a week or two, it will quickly balance out. Also keep in mind that the powders, clay and activated charcoal that are in our formulation absorb much of the moisture to help keep things dry.

Also if you experience any initial slight body odour with the extra moisture, give it a week or two, your body is flushing toxins. After your body has adapted you will sweat and smell less than before. 

6. Shaving

If you shave your underarms then wait at least 30-60 minutes before putting natural deodorant on. Everything will be sensitive for a while so give it some time to minimize any uncomfortable effects.

7. Exfoliate

Many natural ingredients don't come off of your skin as easily as what you have used in the past. By exfoliating your underarms every couple days you'll make sure you are getting any potential residue off of your skin and keep your pores happy.

8. PH

Because baking soda can effect your PH over time you might need to re-balance. This likely won't be needed since our formula is fairly mild BUT if you do notice some irritation after a prolonged period of use you can simply mix a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar with a cup or filtered water and dab a small amount on your clean dry pits.(Save the created mixture so you can use it for the next few days) Let this completely dry and then apply your natural deodorant as normal. If you do this for several days it will likely help to reset any PH imbalance.

 

When you make the change from something you've been doing for years you will likely find the new routine awkward. The switch to natural deodorant is a very simple thing with huge rewards. Just be patient and give it a couple of weeks to become a new and improved part of your daily routine. You'll be glad you did.
